Discussing the adaptation approach for the live-action Street Fighter movie, the director stated that the film will center on Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li while preserving the exaggerated nature of the game's special moves. He believes the brotherly bond between Ryu and Ken should be the story's core, with Chun-Li having her own goals and backstory.
Recalling his childhood, the director remembered playing console versions of Street Fighter with friends, with Street Fighter II leaving a particularly strong impression. He hopes the film captures the original's fun, free-spirited, and slightly chaotic atmosphere, while showcasing vibrant characters with distinct personalities.
When discussing moves like the Hadoken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, the director admitted that fully replicating game animations in live-action is challenging. Chun-Li's movements therefore incorporate breakdancing and capoeira elements to preserve the game's flair while keeping the action believable. The scene where Ken uses a Shoryuken against Dhalsim retains the exaggerated, game-like style.
The director also mentioned collaborating with CAPCOM and key figures from Street Fighter 6 to align the worldview and essential elements. Details like the car-smashing stage and the "YOU WIN" text in the trailer were included as nods for fans familiar with the game.
The film will be released globally on October 16.
