Developer Reveals Minecraft 1.12.2 Rust Rewrite Project! Claims Same-Seed World Generation

Independent developer haunterdev has unveiled the mc-rs project, an attempt to rewrite Minecraft 1.12.2 in Rust. The developer states that when using the same seed as the original game, the world generates with block-for-block correspondence; players can also collaborate via their browsers.

According to the developer, this correspondence covers terrain, biomes, caves, canyons, lakes, ores, and vegetation. The project also offers browser-based access: the host's computer runs the server for the shared world and streams the visuals to participants. Players can move, chat, and build together without installing a separate client; mobile devices support touch controls.

The graphics are powered by Bevy, retaining block models, textures, lighting, and biome colors from version 1.12.2, while adding dynamic sun shadows, anti-aliasing, and far-view rendering up to 512 chunks.

mc-rs 0.4.0 adds wall paintings, visitor access, and server management features, with support for importing PNG, GIF, or video files as paintings. The project is freely released under the GPL-3.0 license and does not include copyrighted game files. A legitimate Minecraft Java Edition account is required for full operation, as the built-in downloader fetches the necessary official assets, sounds, and models.
