Resident Evil Film Director Discusses Game Inspirations: Adopting the Pacing of Resident Evil 4 and the Perspective of Resident Evil 7

Zach Cregg, director of the Resident Evil film, discussed the influence of the game series on the new movie: he drew inspiration from the pacing of constantly introducing new scenes in Resident Evil 4, and incorporated character elements from Resident Evil 7, where ordinary people find themselves in terrifying situations. These comments come from an interview published on the film's official account.

Cregg stated that the games' influence on the film extends beyond the story, affecting cinematography and viewing perspective as well. In his view, whether through third-person follow cameras or first-person perspectives, players enter spaces alongside characters and gradually learn about their surroundings; this gameplay experience also influenced his understanding of visual storytelling. He specifically mentioned how Resident Evil 4 progresses from the village to the castle and then to the island, continuously introducing new environments along the way.

In the interview, Cregg also shared his experience playing Resident Evil Village in VR mode. The visuals and sounds of the giant baby chasing the character startled him, causing him to take off the headset for a break.
