Following the release of Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Definitive Edition, Steam user reviews have been "Overwhelmingly Negative." SEGA acknowledged that the current gaming experience has not met player expectations or company standards. SEGA is collaborating with platform partners to temporarily remove the Definitive Edition from store pages while reinstating sales of the original version to facilitate issue investigation.
Player feedback highlights issues including lingering bugs from the original game, new problems introduced in the Definitive Edition, as well as concerns regarding visual presentation and performance. SEGA stated it is working with development partners to identify causes and implement improvements, aiming for the Definitive Edition to meet the quality expectations players have for the Total War series.
The Definitive Edition includes all DLC and content from the original game. It was originally intended to deliver enhanced visuals, lighting, shadows, and textures, along with UI scaling support for 1440p and 4K resolutions. Additionally, the new version features modernized controls, new Japanese and Chinese voiceovers, over 50 new playable factions, integrated in-game mod support, and a 64-bit upgrade.
SEGA explicitly confirmed that players who have already purchased the Definitive Edition can still access and play the game. The plan to suspend sales of the Definitive Edition and restore availability of the original version is being coordinated with platform partners; final implementation remains subject to updates on the respective platform store pages.
