Starlink: Battle for Atlas Celebrates 8th Anniversary, Author Suggests Ubisoft Develop a Sequel to Continue Open-World Flight Gameplay

On the eighth anniversary of Starlink: Battle for Atlas, a ComicBook.com author suggested that Ubisoft develop a sequel, continuing the original's open-flight experience that transitions directly from aerial combat to surface exploration. Comparing it to Nintendo's new take on Star Fox 64, the author argues that this open design is worth further exploration.

The author particularly appreciates the original's seamless flight progression: players can transition from above planets to the ground without their actions being interrupted by lengthy cutscenes. The Switch version also integrates Fox McCloud and his team into main story dialogue and scenes, adding content related to pursuing Wolf. The author believes this gives Star Fox characters an adventure style different from repeatedly tackling classic levels.

The retrospective also discusses the original game's shortcomings. The optional physical starship toys added burden to the product; after playing for a while, planet liberation missions, enemy facilities, and activity formats tend to feel repetitive.

Ubisoft later added new locations, races, arenas, and missions through the free "Crimson Moon" update, and released additional paid Switch character content, but the title ultimately saw no further development. The author suggests that if a sequel were developed, it should retain the smooth flight experience while making planetary missions and faction conflicts more distinct, reducing repetitive tasks and enriching the role of equipment combinations. These are the author's suggestions for a sequel; Ubisoft has not announced any related new projects.
