Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will conclude the recent "Modern Warfare" sub-series arc, with Activision planning to shift to a new sub-series afterward. Tyler Bahl, Activision's Chief Marketing Officer, stated that the company will change its long-standing structure of releasing multiple entries within the same sub-series consecutively.
Bahl also indicated that some characters may reappear in the future or return in reshaped forms in other games. Therefore, this conclusion targets the recent series arc and does not mean these characters will never return. Currently, there are no details regarding the name or specific plans for the new sub-series.
This adjustment is also related to the feedback for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. After its release in November 2025, the game received mixed reactions, with its Steam reviews noted as "Mostly Negative." Bahl stated that Activision was not satisfied with every aspect of the title and is seriously listening to community feedback.
For Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Activision previously stated it would return to a more realistic direction. Bahl discussed grounded military shooting, cinematic feel, and authenticity, also mentioning the desire to recapture the series' familiar edge. Activision also reflected on exaggerated skins, crossovers, and other content.
