A copy of Uncanny X-Men #107 from 1977, retaining its Mark Jewelers jewelry advertisement insert, is currently up for auction. At the time of writing, bids have exceeded $4,000. This comic has received a CGC grade of 9.8; this issue also marks the first appearance of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard.
No higher-graded copies of this variant are listed in the CGC census. Mark Jewelers ad inserts appeared in select Marvel and DC comics back then, making well-preserved copies with intact inserts even rarer. For such collectibles, both the completeness of the insert and the comic's condition contribute to its uniqueness, though not all collectors recognize the added value of advertisement inserts.
The Shi'ar Imperial Guard, created by Chris Claremont and artist Dave Cockrum, was designed with inspiration from DC's Legion of Super-Heroes. The team has since frequently clashed with the X-Men in various X-Men storylines.
The same copy previously sold for nearly $14,000 through Heritage Auctions in 2021. With two days remaining in the current auction at the time of writing, it remains uncertain whether the final sale price will meet or exceed the previous amount.
