It has been four years since producer Jerry Bruckheimer hinted at a third National Treasure film starring Nicolas Cage. However, there has been little substantial progress since then. But if you're a fan of the adventure series, it's not all bad news, as director Jon Turteltaub revealed in a recent conversation that National Treasure 3 is finally going into production.
On the podcast, Turteltaub spoke about the third film, saying, "It's really happening. I hadn't revealed it before, but you have the right to know this exclusive news. It's finally becoming a reality."
Jon Turteltaub also joked that only an unexpected event, such as Nicolas Cage meeting with an accident, could stop the film from being made.
"Right now, Hollywood is very 'real,' which means anything can happen. If Nick gets hit by a bus, National Treasure 3 won't be made."As long as we can make it happen, everyone will return."
According to Variety, National Treasure grossed $347 million worldwide after its 2004 release. Starring Nicolas Cage and Diane Kruger, the film follows two historians who become entangled in a conspiracy to steal a treasure map hidden by the Freemasons years ago. The cast also includes Justin Bartha, Jon Voight, Harvey Keitel, and Sean Bean.
The sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, was released three years later and reportedly earned $459 million worldwide. In 2022, Disney launched a series based on the franchise titled Edge of History, but it lasted only one season.
