The mid-campaign review for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on PC is now available. This evaluation praises the campaign's visuals, pacing, and grand scale, while noting that the directorial control over the flow is too strong, with rigid mission boundaries limiting the overall experience; these conclusions do not cover multiplayer or the full product.
The campaign opens with North Korean forces suddenly attacking everyday streets in Seoul, quickly establishing a strong sense of place while continuing to tie together character and narrative threads from 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. After assassinating General Shepherd, Price becomes a fugitive; engagements in Paris, confrontations with former teammates, and village missions from the perspective of North Korean soldiers repeatedly touch on the moral choices faced by the characters.
The "Stranded" mission received special praise. Players start with only a pistol, allowing them to scavenge for gear and choose their own objective order. Set pieces like infiltrating a club and breaking out showcase action movie-inspired design, while the scale of the amphibious assault on Seoul also left a deep impression on reviewers.
However, the campaign imposes strict constraints on movement paths. Deviating from the commander, climbing over low fences, or briefly losing sight of your squad can directly result in mission failure; accidentally hitting even one civilian during firefights will also immediately end the mission. Although the amphibious assault on Seoul is grand in scale, its placement right after a free-exploration mission makes these restrictions feel even more pronounced.
