Former Valve Writer Claims Gabe Newell Designed Steam as an MMO

Former Valve writer Chet Faliszek stated that Gabe Newell's design direction for Steam can be summarized as an MMO, not just a digital game store. This is a metaphor for the platform's product philosophy; it does not mean Steam has changed its platform type, nor does it indicate that Valve has announced a new project.

Faliszek listed features such as account leveling, game drops, trading cards, profile page customization, user rewards, and giftable items. He believes these systems allow users to continuously accumulate content, showcase their identity, and gain a sense of participation similar to that in massively multiplayer online games within the Steam ecosystem.

According to his understanding, when players use Steam, they are not just buying and launching games; they can also express themselves with a low barrier to entry and feel their place, influence, and agency within this "world" through community features. He also acknowledged that Valve's community governance still has shortcomings and that Steam needs to better monitor and address certain issues on the platform, but these flaws do not negate the role of the community system in fostering user engagement.

Faliszek also compared Steam with the Epic Games Store, arguing that the latter lacks a clear "North Star." While Epic offers UEFN and Unreal Engine tools that support creation and expression, the required investment is far higher than everyday interactions like selling a low-priced trading card, so most ordinary users do not participate.
