Arc Raiders TV and Film Adaptations to Fill Game's Narrative Gaps, Rich World-Building Fosters Diverse Stories

What will the live-action series and film adaptations of Arc Raiders look like? Previously, Chernin Entertainment, the external partner for the game, announced that an adaptation project was in development, though their statement was rather vague. Recently, Alexander Glendal, Executive Producer at Embark Studios, the developer of Arc Raiders, revealed that the adaptations will lean more towards character-driven narratives, whereas the core experience of the original game immerses players in the surrounding world.

I had a brief conversation with Glendal about Embark's plans for adapting its IPs, which also includes the studio's previously released competitive shooter, The Finals. Arc Raiders itself has a minimal narrative presence, supplementing world-building details only through scattered missions, short cutscenes, and promotional CGIs, leaving players to write their own stories and explore the world's lore through speculation. This approach works well for interactive games, but series or films require a clearer main storyline to support the narrative.

"You're absolutely right," Glendal responded. "We feel that the world we've built is like fertile ground, capable of supporting all kinds of stories. Exploring these possibilities, tapping into their potential, and seeing what ultimately emerges is something I find very meaningful and look forward to. Of course, it all depends on the specific creative proposals, but I'm excited to see how far we can take this."

Embark Studios currently has numerous projects on its plate and is not a professional film production team. Nevertheless, although Chernin Entertainment is leading the adaptation project, the original creative team behind Arc Raiders will naturally be involved.

"We will definitely be involved in some capacity," Glendal stated. "For us, finding a truly trustworthy partner is crucial—someone who understands the core of Arc Raiders, grasps our creative direction, and captures the fun and uniqueness of this IP. We believe Chernin Entertainment is such a partner. We will let professional filmmakers do what they do best, while continuously providing our input to maintain the brand's core identity and ensure the adaptation aligns with our long-term vision for Arc Raiders."

Arc Raiders has been dubbed a "story generator" by players: in the game, players compete for resources and betray each other, yet also frequently form unexpected temporary alliances. However, the core setting takes place at the end of the 22nd century, where Earth's surface is largely occupied by mechanical forces. The last human survivors struggle to survive, striving to uncover the truth behind this mechanical threat and push it back.

The game world features a retro-futuristic aesthetic, which should appeal to fans of the Fallout live-action series. Meanwhile, the origin of the "Arc" in the game's title remains an unresolved mystery—reportedly to be revealed soon in the storyline—adding considerable suspense to this narrative tinged with "gray goo" crisis vibes. In other words, given the excellent reception of the Fallout series, if Chernin Entertainment can create characters more compelling than the "function-over-personality" figures in the game, the Arc Raiders film adaptation could very well achieve success on the big screen.
