"It Takes Two" offers a free upgrade for Switch 2, but the current upgrade process is experiencing issues. Owners of the original Switch version are temporarily unable to complete the upgrade through the normal path, although specific actions may trigger the redemption of the digital version. The developer is aware of the problem and is preparing a fix.
Social media account Wario64 reports that users need to borrow or rent a physical Switch cartridge, update the game to version 1.0.4, then select online play and connect to EA servers. After being redirected to the Nintendo Account Information page, selecting "Cancel" will cause the game to display error code 401-2710.
At this point, pressing the Y button, reselecting the initial user, and entering the eShop is reportedly sufficient to claim the free digital version. However, this is not how the upgrade mechanism was intended to work, nor is it an official free promotion. As fixes are rolled out, this workaround may soon become ineffective.
"It Takes Two," developed by Hazelight Studios and published by EA, is a cooperative action-adventure game. It won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2021, holds a Metacritic score of 89, and has sold over 30 million copies. The developer is currently preparing a fix for this upgrade issue.
