Developer Creates Earth-Scale Sandbox Using Real Map Data, Not Yet a Complete Game

Developer Charlie Chapman showcased an Earth-scale open-world experiment driven by real map data. The project can render the entire planet as a playable space, but it remains a personal technical sandbox rather than a complete game, with no confirmed plans yet on whether it will evolve into a full commercial release.

Chapman describes it as a combination of Grand Theft Auto and early Apple Maps. The custom engine streams OpenMapTiles and other public domain map data, overlaying procedural content on top. Buildings feature procedurally generated interiors, and the project includes vehicles, skateboards and skate parks, ski resorts, cable cars, and a photo mode.

The weather system also operates on a planetary scale, including rain, wind, storms, tornadoes, and hurricanes, allowing players to observe weather patterns approaching from afar. The engine is written in C++ and uses Metal and Vulkan renderers; according to the developer, it can run on all Apple platforms except the Apple Watch.

Later demos also featured a sports car equipped with lunar lander thrusters. The project's audio system is just beginning development; what is currently shown is an experimental sandbox composed of multi-layered systems, rather than a commercially announced game.
