"Street Fighter" Live-Action Film Tops Global Box Office with Polarized Reviews

The live-action "Street Fighter" movie claimed the top spot at the global box office during its opening weekend, with total earnings of approximately $51.1 million. Of this, $31 million came from the North American market, and $20.1 million from other overseas regions. Although the initial box office performance was strong, lukewarm critical reception may impact the film's subsequent box office trajectory.

Directed by Kitao Sakurai, the film features an all-star cast including Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Liang Jingkang as Chun-Li, David Dastmalchian as Vega, and Jason Momoa as Blanka. Despite the impressive lineup and exciting fight scenes, it failed to win over everyone. In its early release period, the film received a 41% Fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 4.4/10 score on IMDb.

However, general audience reviews are significantly better than those from professional critics: the Rotten Tomatoes audience approval rating stands at 79%. Many viewers feel that while the plot is straightforward, the fight scenes are satisfying and the action quality is excellent. The film clearly targets fans of the original fighting game.

Box office comparison: The film's global performance currently lags behind its competitor, the "Mortal Kombat" series. The 2021 version of "Mortal Kombat" earned $22.5 million in its North American opening weekend, while this year's "Mortal Kombat 2" took in $63 million globally during its opening weekend. Whether "Street Fighter" can maintain its box office momentum will determine the ultimate success or failure of this project.

Produced jointly by Paramount Pictures, Legendary Pictures, and Capcom, the film had a production budget of approximately $82 million. To recoup costs, it needs to maintain box office热度 (heat/momentum) beyond its first week. Negative reviews will make breaking even more difficult and reduce the likelihood of a sequel being made; however, current audience feedback is generally positive.
