Dan Houser Recalls How Red Dead Redemption and Bully Nearly Didn't Make It

Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser recently recalled that Red Dead Redemption nearly failed to launch multiple times during development, and Bully faced a similar predicament. The development of these two titles, which later became key representatives of Rockstar, was not smooth sailing from the start.

Houser did not specify the exact difficulties each project encountered, but he emphasized that game development is highly contingent. When a project struggles, a strong build, various components suddenly clicking into place, or key team members remaining focused on a shared vision can all change the project's fate.

He also stated that some games that were ultimately never completed may have come very close to crossing that threshold. This means whether a project takes shape can sometimes depend on whether a turning point occurs at a critical juncture during development.

Red Dead Redemption and Bully are now regarded as important works by Rockstar alongside Grand Theft Auto. Houser's recollections also reveal that these projects, which eventually joined the company's lineup of flagship titles, experienced significant uncertainty before their final completion.
