The animated sequel to "Smallville" has not yet been officially greenlit. Lead actor Tom Welling stated that Warner Bros. still needs to approve the team's use of the relevant intellectual property, but those involved are continuing to push the project forward and remain optimistic about the outcome.
According to Welling's vision, the sequel would be animated, with the original cast reprising their roles as voice actors. All the actors approached so far have expressed interest in participating, and the team has already prepared early visual designs by an artist, along with a poster that cannot be disclosed at this time.
Michael Rosenbaum previously revealed that the original series creators, Al Gough and Miles Millar, had written a proposal years ago and were simply waiting for the right moment to submit it to Warner Bros. However, Rosenbaum expressed reservations about whether the project could fit into the DC Universe plans established by James Gunn and Peter Safran, worrying that adding another "Smallville" timeline would further complicate the overall setting.
Welling envisions the sequel starting shortly after the original series' finale, telling a subsequent story in a relatively standalone manner. However, he clarified that this is merely his personal concept and that the final plan has not been determined. The currently available information only reflects the preparatory intentions of the creators and cast; Warner Bros. has not yet commissioned the project nor confirmed the return of the original cast.
