Bartosz Sztybor, the creator of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, recently discussed the Season 1 finale, stating that while viewers often see it as a tragic ending, he considers it a "happy ending" because the story could have ended in a much worse way.
At the end of Season 1, most members of Maine's crew died. Maine did not survive, and Rebecca was killed by Adam Smasher. David, who had originally hoped to go to the moon with Lucy, stayed behind to buy time for the remaining two members to escape, ultimately dying at the hands of Arasaka's heavy forces.
Sztybor believes that some characters are inherently tragic figures, making entirely different endings impossible. The so-called worse possibilities might relate to another fate mentioned earlier for David: he could have become a tool unconsciously manipulated by Arasaka.
Discussing Season 2, Sztybor stated that his fundamental views on the Cyberpunk setting and Night City did not change significantly before he began writing. The new season will revolve around new characters, including veteran edgerunner Weak Kingsley, nomad D., heavily cybernetically enhanced Talia, and Roman, a kid who wants to film footage on the streets of Night City. It is scheduled to launch on October 20.
