Spreading Zero: Combines Slow-Motion Gunfights and Gravity Pull to Recreate Early 2000s FPS Style

Spread Zero targets early 2000s first-person shooters for its retro aesthetic, rather than mimicking the common '90s "Boomer Shooter" style. Through slow-motion gunfights, telekinetic powers, and retro audiovisuals, the game attempts to recreate the FPS design style of that period.

The game draws inspiration from titles like Halo: Combat Evolved, Half-Life 2, and F.E.A.R. Players can engage in firefights using slow motion, telekinetically pull environmental objects to throw at enemies, and wield a melee weapon similar to the Gravity Hammer. Brown, orange, and muted gray tones create a distinct period aesthetic, while electronic music and chanted vocals further enhance the early-2000s atmosphere.

Combat requires players to keep moving and utilize resources found on the battlefield. Firearms only use the ammunition currently in the magazine; once empty, they must be discarded immediately, and new weapons picked up from fallen enemies. The author appreciates the rhythm created by this constant weapon swapping, but notes that the inability to sprint while using telekinesis slows down action transitions.

Enemy shields being overly durable is another issue affecting the experience. The limited ammo mechanic is further constrained during boss fights, often requiring battles to end quickly or relying on constantly spawning minions to replenish firearms. The developers have recently addressed shield-related issues via patches, and the author feels the game's direction of adjustments has improved.

The author believes that designs bridging old-school fast-paced shooters and later realistic military shooters are still worth revisiting. Such games can accommodate fantastical mechanics and distinctive level design, while using cost-effective retro graphics to establish a visual style distinct from pixel art. Spread Zero has its flaws, but it demonstrates the potential for continuing to draw inspiration from this era of FPS history.
