Pokémon Anime English Licensing Changed Hands 20 Years Ago! Voice Actors for Ash and Other Main Characters Replaced

Approximately 20 years ago, the English version of the Pokémon anime underwent a key transition. After 4Kids Entertainment's license expired, dubbing responsibilities were taken over by Pokémon USA (now The Pokémon Company International), resulting in a change of English voice actors for Ash and other main characters.

This change occurred during the Pokémon: Battle Frontier era. This season is the ninth season of the Pokémon anime, as well as the fourth and final season of Pokémon Advanced Generation, following Ash, Brock, May, and Max as they challenge the Battle Frontier Brains in the Kanto region. The series premiered in Japan on October 6, 2005, and reached US audiences on Cartoon Network about a year later.

4Kids Entertainment handled the English dubbing from the first season, with their license expiring on December 31, 2005. Alongside the transfer of dubbing duties, the broadcast platform shifted from Kids’ WB to Cartoon Network. The change in the main cast sparked a strong backlash, largely due to the significant fanbase of Veronica Taylor, the original voice actor for Ash.

Sarah Natochenny, who took over as Ash's voice actor, was initially asked to mimic her predecessor's voice, but the new cast still had a noticeably different overall sound. Some viewers launched petitions hoping for the return of the original cast, but these efforts ultimately did not succeed.

As viewers gradually adjusted, the controversy surrounding the voice change eventually subsided. This transition remains a significant turning point for the English version of the Pokémon anime, marking the end of 4Kids' long tenure handling the series' English dubbing.
