God of War Creator Criticizes PlayStation Leadership, Claims It Lacks Soul

Many of PlayStation's recent moves, such as canceling physical disc releases, have sparked strong backlash from players. Not only have gamers criticized the brand, but industry insiders like David Jaffe have also expressed negative views on PlayStation for various reasons. In his latest video, he pointed out that PlayStation has not fully leveraged its existing IPs.

While discussing God of War: Ghost of Sparta, David Jaffe shared his opinion that games like Castlevania: Curse of Darkness better represent the Metroidvania genre than God of War spin-offs.

The creator of the God of War series believes that God of War: Ghost of Sparta should not have been released in its current state. He also discussed the God of War: Ragnarök Collector's Edition, pointing out that despite the $170 price tag, the included statue looked cheap and disappointing.

He stated that merchandise like this would never have been approved in the past, highlighting how PlayStation's standards have declined over the years, possibly due to a lack of control and commitment from leadership.

"This is a complete lack of creative oversight, with no one saying 'no, this isn't good enough.' I'm saddened because I miss the soul of the company that once stood for 'excellence.'"

Additionally, he stated that during his time at PlayStation, he often fought with management, HR, and others to ensure fans could play the best possible versions of games. The former God of War developer said he is "very dissatisfied with PlayStation" due to some of its recent poor decisions.

Of course, this isn't the first time David Jaffe has criticized PlayStation. Previously, he had offered similar harsh critiques of God of War and Marvel's Wolverine.
