Leaker Kepler_L2 stated that Sony's next-generation console, the PS6, may offer graphical performance surpassing NVIDIA's next-generation mid-range card, the RTX 6060. Related assessments suggest that the PS6's performance could approach that of the RTX 5070 Ti, or even come close to the RTX 5080. Adding to PC gamers' dismay, the RTX 6060 might not launch until 2029, later than the PS6's expected 2027 release.
Detailed report from foreign media:
Next-generation hardware has been a hot topic in the console space in recent months, as next year (2027) marks the seventh anniversary of the current-generation PS5 and Xbox Series launches. Both Sony and Microsoft are expected to release the PS6 and Project Helix by the end of 2027, but what about next-generation desktop GPUs? According to a reliable leaker, they may still be several years away.
Although multiple media outlets reported that the RTX 5090 had been canceled, NVIDIA insists it has not. Even so, due to its high price, this GPU remains out of reach for most people. That said, its performance far exceeds current-generation consoles, whose capabilities are only comparable to older desktop GPUs like the RTX 2070 Super or RTX 4060. However, the PS6 is expected to perform close to the level of the RTX 5070 Ti or even the RTX 5080. What does this mean for the next generation of RTX GPUs?
Leaker Kepler_L2 replied to a comment comparing the PS6's GPU, stating that the NVIDIA RTX 6060 will not outperform the PS6. This means that, unlike current-generation consoles, Sony's next-gen system will at least surpass NVIDIA's mid-range GPU. Assuming the RTX 6060 performs on par with or better than the RTX 5070 or RTX 5070 Ti, the PS6 would still be faster.
Kepler also discussed the release schedule for the RTX 6060, indicating it will arrive much later, possibly not until 2029. NVIDIA often significantly delays the launch of entry-level graphics cards during supply shortages. It is highly likely that the RTX 6060 won't hit the market until 2029.
NVIDIA has adopted a similar strategy with its RTX 50 series graphics cards. The high-end RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 were released last January, followed by the lower-end RTX 5060 in May. Kepler believes that the RTX 60 series will follow the same pattern, with high-end models launching before the entry-level ones. He mentioned a similar viewpoint last month and appears to be sticking to this timeline.
