The horror game Nightmares blends retro 2D pixel art with live-action cutscenes, using abrupt shifts between the two visual styles to create unease. Currently, Fanatical is offering Steam keys for the title at $18.24 or £13.13.
Protagonist Julia enters a parallel world while visiting her ex-boyfriend, thereafter pursued by nightmares that are more than mere hallucinations. Players first confront threats in pixelated environments before seeing the monsters' true forms in live-action segments, creating an experience akin to a horror movie.
The game's style draws inspiration from classics like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, with the transition between its two visual languages described as reminiscent of Clock Tower shifting into live-action film sequences.
Nightmares was co-created by Andrés Borghi, Tobías Rusjan, and Saibot Studios, with New Blood Interactive handling publication. The publisher is also associated with titles such as Ultrakill, West of Dead, and Gloomwood.
