The PS5 is now in its seventh year on the market, and Sony is advancing preparations for its next-generation console, the PS6. Previous leaks suggested that the cost of memory and flash storage components alone for the PS6 exceeds $680, leading to speculation that the console's retail price could reach $1,000.
Recently, foreign media outlet PushSquare conducted a user poll with 4,182 participants. Among them, 17% of respondents said they would be willing to spend $1,000 directly to purchase the PS6, while 18% indicated they would hesitate but might still end up buying it. Meanwhile, 64% of players outright refused to pay $1,000 for the PS6.
Another sub-poll focused on installment purchases attracted 3,793 participants. Even if Sony offers an installment plan, 62% of respondents still stated they would not buy the PS6 at the $1,000 price point. Only 13% of respondents were willing to purchase via installments, while 25% chose to pay the full amount upfront.
Traditional home consoles have always emphasized high cost-performance ratios, but the PS6 may break this convention. The PS6 is expected to launch between 2027 and 2028, and the same-generation Xbox Helix console is also positioned toward the high-end market, suggesting its pricing situation will likely not be optimistic either. In the coming years, there will be a period where PS5 and PS6 games coexist across generations, and Sony's final pricing will directly influence consumer choices.
