Nearly Scrapped! Behind-the-Scenes Secrets of GTA 6's NPC Interaction System

GTA 6 adopts the highly acclaimed NPC interaction system from Red Dead Redemption 2 and builds upon it with upgrades. However, if a certain Rockstar executive hadn't changed their mind and decided to share this technology with other teams, we might never have seen it.

Recently, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier visited Rockstar Games and interviewed Rob Nelson, head of Rockstar North, uncovering this behind-the-scenes story. This NPC interaction prototype was developed by Animation Vice President Mark Tennant as early as 2014-2015. In previous games, pressing trigger buttons would only make characters aim their guns at passersby. This prototype revamped that logic, allowing the same button to choose between greeting or provoking NPCs, initiating non-combat character dialogue interactions.

The concept sounds simple, but the actual development workload was enormous. Technical Lead Phil Hook initially didn't want to show this prototype to Rob Nelson. Nelson is famously persistent within the company about perfecting the game world; once he takes interest in an idea, the team faces a huge volume of additional development tasks. Hook worried it would place a significant burden on the entire project.

But the prototype was eventually shown to Nelson. After watching the demo, Nelson was deeply impressed, commenting, "This is incredible; it will completely change how our games and virtual worlds operate." Thanks to his advocacy, the system was retained and first implemented in Red Dead Redemption 2.

It turns out Phil Hook's concerns were not unfounded; developing and implementing this system indeed consumed a massive amount of the team's manpower. However, the final product proved worth the effort. In an interview with IGN, Nelson confirmed that this NPC interaction mechanic will return and undergo deep iterative upgrades in GTA 6.

GTA V and Red Dead Redemption also featured NPC interactions, but they were very rudimentary. Red Dead Redemption 2 was the first to turn greetings and provocations into a complete and mature system, while GTA 6 will push this underlying behavioral logic to a higher level. In the densely populated modern city of Leonida, NPCs will observe the player's weapons, disguises, and ambient noise, responding with layered verbal and physical reactions. If you eavesdrop on passersby, they may even notice your prying behavior, showing alertness, hostility, or simply moving away from you.
