Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III DMZ Preview Highlights Stronger Links Between Missions and Extraction

The new DMZ mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 establishes a tighter connection between missions, gear accumulation, and extraction risks. This hands-on experience changed players' perceptions of the mode, making objectives and loot feel more meaningful compared to the DMZ beta in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

The Operations Base serves as the functional hub for the new DMZ, where players can view Dog.exe tags, purchase boss intel, and manage progression. However, the Windows Central author noted that base functions are scattered across different terminals, feeling somewhat fragmented during initial use.

The main warzone, Haqqan, is vast, featuring a denser environment composed of cities, vegetation, and tall grass, with increased threats from AI enemies. Medical supplies, ammunition, and other resources appear in logically consistent locations, encouraging players to leave hot zones and explore.

Missions include storylines continuing from the campaign, dynamic operations that reshuffle with each deployment, boss hunts, and player-versus-player combat. Successfully extracted supplies can be used to upgrade operator skill trees; if an operator goes missing, players can pay a ransom to retrieve them.

The demo covered scenarios such as squad-based exploration, solo boss hunts, and venturing into high-threat areas. In the latter case, players had to extract before gas coverage spread. After the experience, the author concluded that the new version no longer feels as empty as earlier iterations, with mission objectives, progression, and extraction pressure driving each other.
