AMD and Xbox have announced an expansion of their graphics technology partnership, with FidelityFX Super Resolution 4.1 entering the Xbox ecosystem. The technology will first be applied to the ROG Xbox Ally handheld, and will later launch on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, although the specific release date for the console version has not yet been announced.
Scott Van Vliet, Chief Technology Officer at Xbox, stated that both parties have engaged in close optimization around FSR 4.1, aiming to provide developers with tools that balance performance and visual quality. The scope of collaboration also includes chips in Xbox and Windows hardware, as well as technologies such as DirectX, Advanced Shader Delivery, and AutoSR.
Regarding the next-generation Xbox project, AMD confirmed that the hardware codenamed Project Helix will adopt FSR Diamond. AMD has not yet disclosed the specific features of Diamond, hardware specifications, or the release date for Project Helix.
AMD also stated that part of its research into FidelityFX Super Resolution upscaling originated from the "Project Amethyst" collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment. This work focused on combining advanced graphics rendering with machine learning and became the foundation for FSR 4.1 on the Radeon RX 6000, RX 7000, and RX 9000 series, as well as related spectral super resolution technologies on PlayStation 5.
According to the currently announced roadmap, machine learning upscaling will expand from PCs and handhelds to cover existing Xbox consoles and will be included in the technical planning for the next generation of Xbox. The actual visual quality, performance benefits, and range of game support remain to be demonstrated in the future.
