Control: Resonance Creative Director Explains Why Old Gods of Asgard Didn't Perform New Songs

Mikael Kasurinen, Creative Director of Control: Resonance, explained why the Old Gods of Asgard did not contribute new songs for the sequel. With the new game centered on Dylan's emotional journey, the development team wanted the music to serve the characters and plot, avoiding flashy musical sequences that could distract from the narrative focus.

The Old Gods of Asgard are the fictional incarnation of the real-life band Poets of the Fall within Remedy's works. The band performed "Take Control" for the Ashtray Maze segment in the original Control and also contributed "Herald of Darkness" to Alan Wake 2. In Control: Resonance, players can only see a related poster and cannot hear any new songs from the band.

Kasurinen stated that the new game's story, other characters, and villains all revolve around Dylan's emotional journey, leading the team to adopt a "less is more" approach. He believes that the music-driven Ashtray Maze was better suited for the previous title, and replicating that style in Dylan's story might undermine the introspective tone required for the work.

This choice does not mean that Control: Resonance abandons music entirely; rather, it rebalances the hierarchy between music, characters, and storyline.
