Developer Akbar Karimov has released the SA:COOP mod for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, allowing two players to cooperate online through the original storyline. Unlike SAMP and MTA, which focus on multiplayer sandbox experiences, this mod primarily synchronizes existing missions, cutscenes, and the open world.
When playing online, the host starts the server using their own save file. Joining players bring in their character's appearance, clothing, tattoos, money, physical stats, and weapon skills from their most recent save, with progress saved on the host's side under their nickname. A mission only begins once both players have entered the mission marker.
Subtitles, dialogue, timers, and radar markers can be displayed in the game language selected by each player, and weapons provided by the story will be issued to both players simultaneously. Cutscenes will play synchronously on both screens; skipping them requires confirmation from both players.
The mod can also synchronize weather, time, pedestrians, police, traffic, destructible objects, collectibles, and gang territory status, while transmitting information on vehicle damage, modifications, hydraulic systems, and towing. Version 0.2.0 adds a friendly fire toggle, position-based voice chat with distance attenuation, text chat, mutual teleportation, and quick connection via a 12-digit code.
Running the mod requires the original 1.0 US executable; Steam and Rockstar Games Launcher versions must be downgraded first. The project is open-sourced on GitHub under the MIT license and can be used with certain visual mods as long as the story scripts remain unmodified.
