COSMICPUP STUDIO, under Tencent Games, has officially announced the open-world RPG "Humanity's Whimsy Project." The game will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, with the PC version available on Steam, Epic Games Store, and WeGame. There is currently no release date, but pre-registration is now open. The story takes place in the cloud city of "Yiledo," where urban legends are no longer just material for horror stories but fundamental laws governing daily city life; humans coexist with strange beings known as "Folklore Entities," holding grand parades every year on "Mythoid Day."
Players take on the role of a certified investigative consultant from a relevant agency, starting with ordinary commissions from both humans and "Folklore Entities," gradually uncovering the secrets behind their coexistence. The released 22-minute trailer showcases parades, tracking missions, anomalous zones formed from obsessions, and seamless transitions from real-world streets to the ruins of the Nightingale Theater. The game is built using Unreal Engine 5 for environments, characters, and cutscenes. According to official statements, team members have previously worked on several well-known projects, and the studio aims to tell a story about coexistence and investigation within an open-world framework, based on the premise that "urban legends are the daily laws of life."
Combat emphasizes a combination of blocking, precise dodging, timely character switching, and multi-phase boss mechanics, avoiding a single "correct" solution for encounters. The appearance, backstory, and combat rules of the folklore-inspired bosses are interconnected. The first trailer outlined the world-building, main story chapters, and two distinct combat mechanics, serving as the primary material for editors to assess its open-world structure, narrative style, and actual gameplay direction. Based on the trailer's content, the investigator role's mission-based progression may allow for a more natural integration between main and side quests in terms of storytelling.
"Humanity's Whimsy Project" is currently in its early access phase, with no details yet disclosed regarding its release window, operational model, or monetization structure. Pre-registration is open, but the developers have not announced any testing plans or launch schedule. For players interested in Chinese-made open-world RPGs, this title is certainly worth keeping an eye on, though its actual level of polish and gameplay depth will need to be evaluated through future gameplay demos and player feedback.
