Version 0.2.1 of the unofficial native Windows port of the Xbox 360 version of Gears of War 3 is now available, supporting up to 240 FPS and extending the original System Link multiplayer to online play. This project remains a technical experiment and is not an official PC release by Microsoft or the game's developers.
The project uses XenonRecomp to pre-translate PowerPC code into C++, which is then compiled into native x86-64 code. As a result, CPU execution does not rely on the Xenia emulator, while graphics still operate through Xenia's Direct3D 12 GPU layer. Version 0.2.1 also supports native keyboard and mouse camera controls, controllers, resolution scaling, and 16x anisotropic filtering.
Developers have tested all 31 chapters across the five acts of the campaign, confirming that each chapter loads correctly into cutscenes and gameplay. Combat, turrets, vehicles, and Maelstrom submarine sections are all operational, and saving and checkpoint resumption work as expected. However, only a few minutes of each chapter in Acts 2 through 5 have been tested so far; full playthroughs have not yet been completed, so full compatibility for the entire campaign cannot be guaranteed at this time.
Offline modes such as Horde, Beast, and matches with bots are functional. Online multiplayer requires connection codes or a virtual LAN via a dedicated server. Current testing covers co-op versus, the initial waves of Horde and Beast modes, and a second player joining the co-op campaign, but Xbox Live is not supported. Users must also provide their own copy of the Gears of War 3 disc image, from which the installer extracts data, recompiles the code, and generates a native Windows version.
