A group of unidentified private equity firms reportedly studied acquiring Xbox, valuing the business between $100 and $150 billion. However, this idea was quickly abandoned and did not progress to the stage of negotiations with Xbox or Microsoft.
Current reports do not specify when this assessment took place, nor do they disclose the names of the involved firms. The so-called nearly $100 billion "offer" was not a formal acquisition bid that had been submitted; more accurately, it was an internal calculation by potential buyers regarding the transaction's scale.
Xbox head Asha Sharma has clearly stated that Xbox is not for sale. There is also no evidence indicating that Microsoft actively sought to sell Xbox, received formal offers, or engaged with any potential buyers.
For scale, Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion in 2022, an asset also considered a significant component of Xbox's overall valuation. If a deal worth $100 to $150 billion were to actually happen, its scale would clearly surpass existing M&A records in the gaming industry, but related concepts currently remain only at the assessment stage.
