AMD and Microsoft Confirm FSR 4.1 Coming to Current-Gen Xbox Devices

AMD and Microsoft have announced that the FSR 4.1 upscaling technology will come to current-generation Xbox devices, covering Xbox Series X|S as well as the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X handhelds. This technology will provide developers with new tools to balance performance and image quality.

FSR 4.1 uses machine learning to upscale images rendered at lower resolutions. It can also be combined with frame generation and ray tracing improvements to free up performance headroom, allowing games to target 60 or 120 FPS while maintaining image quality as much as possible. Scott Van Vliet, Head of Xbox Technology, stated that Microsoft and AMD have been working together to optimize this technology.

Reports indicate that Xbox Series X|S developers will receive access to FSR 4.1 in the coming weeks, with some partner developers already having access to preview builds. The Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X are expected to receive the relevant drivers by October 23 via the newly added "Preview Update" channel in Armoury Crate.

Games on PC that have already integrated FSR 4.1 will automatically benefit once the handheld drivers are released. However, Xbox consoles will not automatically add this feature to older games; developers will still need to release patches or provide native support in future titles. Reports also mention that a small number of enhanced games are planned for release during the year-end holiday season, with the supported lineup set to expand further in 2027 and beyond. AMD previously used "Blood of the Dawn Walker" for demonstrations, but this title has not yet been officially confirmed as an early supported game.
