CDPR Pays Tribute to Legendary Studio BioWare, Recalling Past Support

Following news of BioWare's closure, CD Projekt Red Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski reflected on the long-standing connection between the two companies. He stated that BioWare provided the engine, expertise, and exposure for the development of the first The Witcher, making it a significant part of CD Projekt Red's history.

The collaboration between the two parties began with Baldur's Gate. CD Projekt Red approached BioWare and Interplay to secure localization work for the game in Poland, and later distributed related titles in markets such as the Czech Republic and Slovakia. A subsequent localization partnership for Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance failed to materialize due to Interplay's circumstances, but CD Projekt Red and BioWare maintained contact.

During the development of the first The Witcher, BioWare lent the Aurora Engine to the then-small Polish studio, shared development insights, and provided exhibition space at their E3 booth.

Photos shared by translator and localization specialist Ryszard Chojnowski show that CD Projekt Red showcased a demo of The Witcher running on the Aurora Engine at BioWare's booth in 2004. Nowakowski also mentioned mutual visits between Edmonton and Warsaw, expressing sorrow for the affected employees and the end of this legendary brand.
