The new extraction mode DMZ in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has been released early to digital pre-order customers. The scripted opening of this mode includes a scene where the military Dog.exe Rex is shot and injured; player feedback indicates that taking control of the soldier and exiting the opening allows skipping the entire sequence without losing loot, though this method still needs to be verified against the actual game content.
DMZ features extraction shooter gameplay. Players need to enter a large open map, engage with hostile NPCs and other players, complete tasks, gather supplies, and successfully extract to keep their acquired items. However, its opening is not a standard mechanics tutorial, but a complete scripted narrative.
In the opening, the player-controlled soldier lands alongside the military Dog.exe Rex and heads to a crashed drone to retrieve a black box and data. The two are then ambushed by two North Korean soldiers; after knocking down the enemies, Rex is shot. The soldier drags him to cover, intending to return later, but is subsequently captured and executed.
This opening does not reveal Rex's ultimate fate, and the current experience has yet to show players acquiring their own military Dog.exe partner. Some players hope that future missions will include a rescue operation for Rex, but his subsequent status remains to be confirmed by the actual game content.
