Foreign Media: Microsoft No Longer Expects a "Halo Infinite"-Style Revival After Layoffs and Franchise Restructuring

After Microsoft laid off 268 employees at Halo Studios and placed the future of the Halo franchise under Activision's umbrella, a long-time player feels they no longer have expectations for the series' revival as represented by Halo Infinite. This is the author's personal judgment based on the series' history, not a complete announcement from Microsoft regarding Halo's future.

When 343 Industries was renamed Halo Studios, the author once believed the studio could clarify the direction of Master Chief's story and bring the series into a more stable new phase. The remastered release in July, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, received mixed reviews among core players but also gave the author hope that this classic shooter could regain attention.

Looking back at the series, the author acknowledged Halo 4's attempt to deepen Master Chief's background as a child soldier and his relationship with Cortana, while criticizing subsequent titles for multiple soft reboots that left these narrative threads underdeveloped. Halo Infinite was originally envisioned as a platform to sustain the series long-term, with its free-to-play multiplayer mode having the potential to compete with live-service games like Fortnite. However, slow seasonal updates and declining active users caused this plan to stall prematurely.

The author ultimately believes that the era and cultural conditions that gave rise to Bungie's original trilogy cannot be replicated, and Xbox's continued pursuit of past emotions leaves behind mostly nostalgia. Therefore, he views Microsoft's recent layoffs and restructuring as a point where his personal expectations were dashed, rather than an official declaration that the Halo series cannot be revived.
