EA recently cut approximately 400 jobs, shut down BioWare, and canceled Mass Effect 5, but the Battlefield franchise is reportedly not in immediate danger. According to Jason Schreier and informed sources, EA still plans to continue developing the brand, although the next installment has not yet been officially announced.
The report links this decision to the market performance of Battlefield 6. Released in 2025, the title broke multiple records and garnered significant attention. Although its popularity has since waned, it is still regarded as a key entry that helped revitalize the franchise.
In contrast, reports suggest that BioWare's last three titles underperformed, leading to speculation that EA considered the critical reception and commercial success of each studio's projects when allocating resources.
DICE is also reportedly working on Star Wars: Battlefront 3, so even if Battlefield remains a core project for EA, a new entry in the series may not appear in the near term. The current notion of "safety" merely indicates that the franchise has not been affected by this round of layoffs and project cancellations; the development team, platforms, and release window have not been confirmed.
