Former BioWare Developer Says Cancelled Mass Effect 5 Aimed for Greater Player Agency

Following EA's shutdown of BioWare and the cancellation of the next Mass Effect, former Cinematics Production Lead Tony de Waal reflected on the original development direction of Mass Effect 5. The team aimed to grant players a high degree of agency and provide greater freedom of choice.

Cinematics Director Tony de Waal was one of approximately 50 employees laid off after BioWare's closure. In a LinkedIn post, he stated: "I was fortunate to remain at BioWare and contribute to the development of the next Mass Effect. I believe we were creating something special: a level of agency and choice unmatched by any other game.

We looked at recent titles from Larian Studios and CD Projekt Red, and began working on elevating Mass Effect to new heights while staying true to the essence of the trilogy.

I regret that you will never see what we were crafting, and I feel sorrow for those talented developers who sought to push boundaries and create something extraordinary. Please remember those who stayed with BioWare until the very end. They are the most talented people I have ever worked with in my career."

The project team was small, but its members consistently strove to achieve more than their size would suggest. De Waal expressed regret that players would never see these concepts realized. Writers Catherynne M. Valente and Derek Künsken also voiced confidence in the project's direction, though they did not disclose gameplay details to the same extent.

As Mass Effect 5 was still in early development, the above remarks represent former developers' recollections of the team's goals rather than completed, verifiable final systems, and do not constitute any publishing commitments.
