Recently, a mod called RE3Controls has brought a modernized control experience to Resident Evil 5. Drawing inspiration from the camera and control design of Resident Evil 3 Remake, this mod adds features such as free over-the-shoulder view, moving while aiming and shooting, reloading on the move, and weapon switching. It also includes a central crosshair and a quick-turn mechanic, making combat controls in this classic title more flexible.
RE3Controls supports both controller and keyboard/mouse inputs, allowing players to aim, shoot, reload, and switch weapons while moving, eliminating the need to frequently stop as in the original game. Players can also continue moving while accessing the inventory. However, the mod does not alter the original inventory, interaction mechanics, or QTE system, focusing primarily on camera and combat control adjustments.
The mod offers extensive customization options. Players can individually disable or adjust different movement features via the INI configuration file. Even if you prefer to keep the original stand-and-shoot style, you can still utilize the new camera and crosshair systems. Additionally, the mod provides a mode that enables only the free camera for melee attacks, catering to players who wish to retain as much of the original control experience as possible.
In terms of compatibility, RE3Controls supports the Steam version of Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition, requiring game version 1.2.0 and Windows 10 or later. Controller input defaults to the in-game D-pad scheme, while keyboard and mouse support was added in version 1.8, utilizing the game's native key bindings. Players can switch input devices at any time, with the mod automatically adjusting based on the most recently used device.
Regarding multiplayer, the mod supports local split-screen, allowing each player to have their own free camera and use either a controller or keyboard and mouse. However, online co-op has not been thoroughly tested, and developers recommend that both players install version 1.7 or newer of the mod. Additionally, there is a DLL filename conflict with RE5Fix, requiring adjustments to related file names as per the compatibility instructions.
RE3Controls is now open-source on GitHub, where players can access the project page for relevant files and installation instructions. For those looking to improve the control feel of Resident Evil 5, this mod offers an experience closer to modern entries in the series while preserving the core mechanics of the original game.
