"Onimusha: Way of the Sword" Adds Dynamic Dismemberment System to RE Engine, Allowing Enemies to Be Sliced Along Blade Trajectories

In a post-launch interview, Onimusha: Way of the Sword director Satoru Niihari discussed the game's combat animations and dynamic dismemberment technology. Capcom specifically added a "Dynamic Dismemberment System" to the RE Engine for this title, allowing enemies to be sliced along the actual path of the sword blade when specific attacks land.

The project began approximately six years ago, with the team aiming from the early stages to convey the power of sword strikes through detailed animations. During development, Capcom produced a large volume of animation and motion capture data, using physics-based calculations to ensure smooth transitions between movements. This allows Miyamoto Musashi's actions, such as swinging or parrying from different angles, to remain natural and fluid.

The Dynamic Dismemberment System does not work by freezing the character and then separating the model. Even as an enemy's death animation and fall are playing, the system synchronizes the cut to enhance the impact of finishing moves like Issen.

Niihari stated that the team did not adopt a design allowing players to freely choose any cutting direction early on, as such controls did not fit the game's pace and style. The system reacts based on the player's current attack, meaning the cutting itself is not a separate input. While this feature is now integrated into the RE Engine, Capcom has not confirmed which future titles will utilize it.
