Amazon Prime Video has officially renewed its adaptation of Carrie. The series topped streaming charts within ten days of its premiere, dispelling doubts about whether a new season would be produced. Amazon has now confirmed that the series, adapted from Stephen King's novel and directed by Mike Flanagan, will return for a new season.
Showrunner Mike Flanagan said, "For fifty years, audiences have known and loved the story of Carrie White. From the very beginning, we envisioned a story that went far beyond the prom, and I am deeply grateful to Stephen King for his trust and support as we explore what comes next." Stephen King added, "I can't wait for audiences to see what lies ahead for Carrie White. Mike Flanagan and I are both excited about the upcoming storyline. It’s going to be spectacular."
Prime Video Renews Carrie for Season 2, But What Happens Next?
Although Mike Flanagan has proven himself to be both a devoted fan of Stephen King and a talented television producer, the announcement of another Carrie adaptation was initially met with skepticism and mockery. The new version of Carrie quickly demonstrated that it was more than just a remake; it not only seamlessly integrated the classic story into a modern setting but also pushed the narrative into new territory through fresh storytelling techniques hinted at but not fully explored in the original novel. However, this has also left the series facing a Game of Thrones-style dilemma: what happens next?
The good news is that although the first season was a faithful adaptation of Stephen King's original novel, leaving no source material for the screen, Flanagan clearly had future plans in mind from the start. In previous interviews, he revealed an "ideal plan" to produce the series over three seasons. Even more excitingly, unlike Game of Thrones, Flanagan is clearly developing the storyline in collaboration with Stephen King himself.
It is worth noting that Carrie may avoid the pitfalls of Game of Thrones not only due to Stephen King's continued involvement but also because it seems to hold a place in a larger plan. King himself has hinted that if Carrie succeeds, "we might do something else, something very special," which many interpret as Carrie being directly linked to Flanagan's long-in-development adaptation of The Dark Tower.
Flanagan has always emphasized that bringing The Dark Tower series to the screen is a daunting task. Although The Dark Tower is directly connected to many of Stephen King's other works, Carrie was not previously considered one of them. Given the expansion of Carrie, which tells the stories of more women with supernatural abilities, fans of The Dark Tower may begin to understand its connection to the series.
