Chaos isn't limited to just one circle; many circles are restless. Recently, a case involving a female streamer sued for fraud over millions in tips has sparked widespread discussion online.
On one hand, the procuratorate indicted for fraud; on the other, the streamer's family filed a counter-report accusing the top donor of extortion. Both sides stick to their versions, making the case full of twists and turns.
According to comprehensive media reports, the incident began in April 2019 when Wei Ying started entertainment live streaming, gradually gaining nearly 2 million fans. At the start of her broadcasts, she was married with children. Due to marital discord, she only formally finalized her divorce in late 2020.
To protect her child and personal privacy, Wei Ying did not proactively disclose her marital and parental status in her live streams. Her family stated that she never claimed to be single and unmarried to the public.
In October 2019, the married Xing Moubin began watching Wei Ying's live streams and frequently sent high-value tips. Following live stream interaction conventions, Wei Ying privately thanked fans for large tips, leading to the two adding each other on WeChat.
Subsequently, Xing Moubin actively pursued Wei Ying. Chat records provided by the family show that Wei Ying explicitly rejected him multiple times, indicating no possibility of developing a relationship, and even advised Xing Moubin to reduce his tipping expenses.
In October 2020, netizens exposed Wei Ying's past of being married with children. When confronted by Xing Moubin, Wei Ying truthfully informed him of her marital and parental status. Despite knowing the truth, Xing Moubin continued to send gifts to her live stream.
In November of the same year, after her attempt to transition failed, Wei Ying planned to return to entertainment live streaming. This move dissatisfied Xing Moubin, who did not want Wei Ying to continue working as a streamer. He demanded a relationship with Wei Ying and threatened that if she refused, he would report her for fraud.
From late 2020 to early 2021, Xing Moubin's sister-in-law acted as a mediator between the two parties. Chat screenshots recorded key dialogues where the mediator asked Xing Moubin if their year-long interaction constituted a romantic relationship. Xing Moubin admitted that Wei Ying had always kept her distance from him, leaving no room for development, and acknowledged that his pursuit was one-sided.
During mediation, Wei Ying's side proactively proposed a refund to settle the dispute, suggesting they could restart their relationship as ordinary friends. However, Xing Moubin rejected this settlement proposal, even stating that he would rather see Wei Ying face imprisonment than accept a refund settlement.
After negotiations completely broke down, the conflict moved to judicial channels. In September 2022, the Criminal Investigation Detachment of the Wenchang Public Security Bureau initiated an investigation into Wei Ying for suspected fraud;
On March 16, 2023, Wei Ying was criminally detained. Subsequently, Xing Moubin joined forces with two other married male fans to report Wei Ying for fraud to the Wenchang Police in Hainan.
The handling of the case was tumultuous. Wei Ying experienced criminal detention and release on bail pending trial. During this period, there was an instance where arrest approval was denied due to insufficient evidence, and the case was twice returned by the procuratorate for supplementary investigation due to unclear facts and insufficient evidence.
In October 2025, the procuratorate in Hainan Province formally indicted Wei Ying for fraud.
The prosecution alleges: Since 2019, Wei Ying fabricated a single and unmarried persona, maintaining ambiguous one-on-one relationships to induce three married fans to make high-value tips, defrauding them of approximately 25 million yuan in total. One person contributed 15 million yuan, while the other two each contributed 5 million yuan. After the incident, Wei Ying only refunded 150,000 yuan to each of the other two victims.
Wei Ying's family denies the fraud allegations. They stated that Wei Ying never deliberately concealed her marital history or fabricated a single persona, and that fan tips were voluntary acts; the 25 million yuan marked in the indictment refers to live streaming revenue, and after platform cuts and tax deductions, Wei Ying's actual income was far lower than this amount.
At the same time, the family pointed out that key timelines such as the case filing and the restart of prosecution highly coincided with the emotional entanglement between Xing Moubin and Wei Ying. Xing Moubin had forced Wei Ying to choose between "dating him" and "going to prison."
There is another major twist in the case: In 2023, Xing Moubin issued a letter of forgiveness, promising to withdraw the case and cease pursuing responsibility, and Wei Ying's family cooperated in advancing the settlement.
However, after their relationship broke down in March 2025, Xing Moubin unilaterally withdrew his letter of forgiveness. Wei Ying was subsequently re-arrested and prosecuted. Currently, the other two reported victims have issued letters of forgiveness, leaving only Xing Moubin insisting on pursuing accountability to the end.
Wei Ying's father also stated that the 15 million yuan demanded by Xing Moubin was actually the compensation amount negotiated in the initial settlement and forgiveness letter, and that Wei Ying ultimately received only over 3 million yuan.
In his own statement, Xing Moubin also admitted that the relevant transfer records included 200,000 yuan in loans and 2 million yuan in investment funds, all of which have since been repaid.
The case has undergone two court hearings in 2026, but no verdict has been announced yet. Whether Wei Ying constitutes fraud remains to be determined by the court's final judgment.
However, as the public prosecution proceeded, Wei Ying's family launched a counter-action for rights protection. In July 2026, they filed a report with the Shanghai police, accusing Xing Moubin of extortion, false accusation, and obstructing testimony, among other charges. The police have currently accepted the report materials.
