The developers of Katana ZERO have shared the latest progress on the DLC. Development is still in full swing, with the current scale reaching "sequel-level." Justin Stander, founder of Askiisoft, confirmed this news on social media on October 22, stating that in addition to the substantial expansion in content volume, the DLC will include an original soundtrack featuring over 30 new tracks, with more updates to follow.
Katana ZERO is a 2D action game where players can manipulate time and engage in combat as a samurai. This DLC was first announced just one week after the game's 2019 release, initially positioned as a small-scale free add-on. In 2021, the developer revealed that its scope had ballooned to six times the original plan, amounting to more than half the size of the main game, describing it as "more like Katana ZERO 1.5 than a DLC." Now, the term "sequel-level" indicates that the project has undergone significant expansion over the past five years.
It remains unclear what "sequel-level" specifically refers to—whether it's the length of the story, the number of levels, or other aspects of content scale. The DLC's release date, price, platform availability, and specific new features have not yet been announced. Previously, the developers had stated multiple times that the DLC would be provided free of charge to players who own the original game. However, given that its scale has far exceeded initial expectations, it is uncertain whether it will remain free upon release. Stander promised more information in the future, suggesting players may need to wait a while longer before this "sequel that isn't a sequel" officially launches.
