Game Freak Develops Liquid Simulation Technology, Possibly Linked to Pokémon: Winds and Waves

A Game Freak programmer and a professor at the University of Tokyo jointly developed a new liquid simulation method, which was presented at the Pacific Graphics 2026 conference. Multiple tests showed that this method accelerates the pressure calculation step by approximately 2.5 to 3 times, and boosts the overall speed of full liquid simulations by about 1.5 times.

This method concentrates more detailed calculations on the areas of water bodies that require the most processing, improving simulation efficiency while minimizing any noticeable drop in visual quality.

Reports suggest that Pokémon: Wind/Wave may feature oceans, tropical islands, and wave scenes, leading to speculation about its potential use in the game. However, there is no confirmation that this technology will be used in any Pokémon games, and its connection to Pokémon: Wind/Wave remains purely media speculation.

There are also rumors that Pokémon: Wind/Wave is scheduled to launch on Switch 2 in 2027, with speculation surrounding its release month, characters, new Pokémon, price, and species count. None of these details were confirmed in this research announcement, and there is currently no evidence that this liquid simulation method has been adapted for the Switch 2.
