Unknown Worlds has named the next patch update for Subnautica 2 "Early Access 2.0." This might mean that players will have to go through another new Early Access phase before the game's full release.
Unknown Worlds has begun rolling out a major update dubbed "Early Access 2.0," and Creative Director Anthony Gallegos clearly believes this update is substantial. In the first episode of a new developer vlog series, he called it "the biggest update since the game's launch."
The core content of this update is a brand-new explorable area featuring five distinct biomes. Gallegos described it as one of the "most chilling areas" the studio has created to date. It is dark and threatening, yet possesses a unique beauty. This information comes from the latest official developer video, with the studio promising to reveal more details in the coming months.
The new area will also expand the story, further detailing the tales of human colonists and the "other presences" in the game, while introducing a host of new creatures. Additionally, the Collector Leviathan will see adjustments to its behavior mechanics. Unknown Worlds promises it will be more terrifying than ever before.
The Collector is an octopus-like Leviathan creature. This update aims to make encounters with it less predictable, increasing tension during exploration. However, the development team has chosen to keep the specific adjustments under wraps for now, planning to reveal them in a future dedicated showcase.
Frog Chassis, Sprint Optimization, and New Circular Rooms
This update will also bring numerous substantive gameplay improvements.
The player's Tadpole submersible will gain a new chassis type called the "Frog." Once installed, this small submersible will acquire arms and legs, taking on a form more akin to a piloted mech. Some players had previously discovered related content by digging through game files, and this feature has now been officially confirmed.
Furthermore, the update will add new bio-mod modules, as well as a circular room type for base building. This feature has been long anticipated by many veteran players.
The most practical quality-of-life improvement is the underwater sprint mechanic. Previously, players had to equip a specific bio-mod module to sprint, meaning they had to sacrifice a slot that could have been used for other useful abilities.
With the "Early Access 2.0" update, players can sprint directly by pressing a button as long as they are wearing fins, without needing to equip the relevant module. Although this is a small change, it is expected to make underwater movement easier and reduce inconveniences during exploration.
Players Want a Full Release Date, Not Another Early Access Phase
Overall, player response to this update has been quite positive, with particular welcome for new content like circular rooms and the Frog Chassis.
However, this announcement has once again sparked long-standing player dissatisfaction: the game still has no announced full release date, and the name "Early Access 2.0" sounds less like a significant development milestone and more like another phase of waiting for players.
One Reddit user quipped: "Early Access 2? Come on, when did we start accepting things like this?"
This dissatisfaction is not without reason, though some player concerns may be premature. The Steam store page for Subnautica 2 stated from the beginning that the Early Access phase was expected to last two to three years, and the game only officially entered Early Access in May 2026.
To date, the game has sold over 5 million copies. Additionally, Unknown Worlds previously experienced a high-profile legal dispute with the founder of its parent company, Krafton.
From the current situation, "Early Access 2.0" seems more like a signal that game development is continuing to progress, rather than evidence that the project has stalled. Of course, players would certainly be more satisfied if the officials could announce a clear full release date.
Subnautica 2 is currently available on PC and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
