Atari has announced it will shut down the software store service for the modern version of the VCS. The store will go offline on February 1, 2027; users can still purchase content until then. Games that have already been purchased and downloaded to the console will remain playable after the store closes. Currently, the platform is no longer accepting new games.
Atari also plans to release a system update that removes the device's reliance on servers, allowing existing content to be used offline after services are terminated. The official commitment explicitly covers games that have already been purchased and fully downloaded, so current users need to complete any pending purchases and download the relevant content to their consoles before the deadline.
The modern version of the Atari VCS was first unveiled at E3 nearly a decade ago and launched in December 2020. Atari stated that it stopped directly selling this hardware in 2025, and the closure of the software store marks another step toward the end of the VCS support lifecycle.
In its official statement, Atari thanked the players and creators who contributed to the platform's content and community, noting that the VCS has earned its place among the many console platforms the company has launched over its more than fifty-year history. With hardware support for the VCS coming to an end, Atari will continue to sell games, handhelds, apparel, and accessories as a game publisher and nostalgic brand.
