Sony ceased shipments of the UBP-X700/K in Japan on October 22, marking the end of sales for its last standalone 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player in the region. There is no news yet regarding a successor model, and remaining stock at the Sony Japan store sold out almost immediately.
The UBP-X700/K was released on May 17, 2025, as a streamlined version of the 2018 UBP-X700 model with streaming apps removed, carrying a final price tag of 58,300 yen. Sony will continue to sell the BDP-S1700/K, which can only play standard Blu-ray discs.
With the discontinuation of the UBP-X700/K, the PlayStation 5 with a disc drive has become the only device in Sony Japan's current lineup capable of playing 4K Blu-ray movies. However, the PlayStation 5 only supports 4K Blu-ray playback with HDR10 and lacks Dolby Vision support found in the UBP-X700/K, meaning it cannot fully replace standalone players for home theater enthusiasts.
Sony previously announced that it would stop releasing new PlayStation games on disc starting January 2028, but has not confirmed whether the next-generation PlayStation console will include a disc drive, with earlier reports suggesting it might feature a detachable option. In February, Sony also announced the gradual discontinuation of all Blu-ray recorders in the Japanese market without introducing successors. Currently, the discontinuation of standalone players is confirmed only for Japan; the UBP-X700U is still listed on the Sony US store, and it remains uncertain whether other markets will follow suit.
