After months of testing, Factorio 2.1 has officially launched, adding multi-cargo rockets, elevated rail extensions, and mine detection features. Wube Software stated that the new version also includes numerous quality-of-life improvements, detail adjustments, and some content originally planned for the 2.0 release but left unfinished.
With the update, rockets can carry multiple different items in a single launch, elevated rails can be built above cargo bays, and mines can serve as tripwires and enemy detectors. These changes provide more flexibility for logistics planning, defense setups, and space transportation.
The development team previously referred to version 2.1 as the "last major update" they planned to produce. While the game may still receive small patches to fix issues, version 2.1 likely signals the nearing end of its major update phase.
Factorio entered Early Access in 2016, followed by its 1.0 official release, the 2.0 update, and major expansion content. The game has never participated in discount promotions, and the team even raised its price in 2023, citing inflation.
Currently, Factorio has garnered over 234,000 positive reviews on Steam, with a 98% approval rating. Data from Steam250 shows it ranks 35th on Valve's platform list, just one spot behind Elden Ring; the game has also since launched on Switch and Switch 2.
