The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Designer Originally Designed Navi as a Cute Girl, Limited by N64 Hardware

Navi from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is one of the most iconic fairy companions in the series. Her constant nagging of "Hey! Listen!" is both annoying and endearing, remaining a classic memory of the Zelda franchise even after all these years. However, the initial design for this little fairy was vastly different from the winged glowing ball we know and love today—she ended up looking this way entirely due to the technical limitations of the Nintendo 64 console.

Nintendo veteran and Ocarina of Time designer Koizumi revealed this back in a 2011 "Iwata Asks" interview. With the upcoming remake drawing renewed attention to the original, the YouTube channel Kit & Krysta dug up this old interview, catching our eye as well. Imagine if Link's companion in Ocarina of Time wasn't a faceless glowing orb? According to Koizumi, Navi was originally conceived as a humanoid character.

Koizumi stated, "Generally, fairy characters are designed as cute girls, but the Nintendo 64's hardware couldn't handle that, so I made her a glowing orb with wings."

This initial design direction makes sense, given that fairies in previous 2D Zelda titles were depicted as Tinker Bell-like girl figures. I personally speculate that the level of detail required for a humanoid model would have been too much to fit into such a small character while still maintaining basic animation and AI performance, making it nearly impossible at the time.

Koizumi was also the core designer behind Ocarina of Time's Z-targeting system, which used Navi as the lock-on indicator instead of a traditional on-screen cursor. In the same interview, he mentioned that Navi was created simply because he didn't want to use a generic, commonplace marker.

He said, "As a designer, I didn't want to use such a crude marker. I wanted to create something different, so I thought of a fairy. After all, this is The Legend of Zelda."

Imagine if Nintendo gave Navi a more realistic female appearance in the Ocarina of Time remake; it would feel both amusing and slightly off-putting. Fortunately, official gameplay footage has confirmed that Navi remains the same iridescent orb, albeit with a smoother model. Still, it's fascinating to think that if the N64's processor had been just a bit more powerful back then, Navi's appearance would likely be completely different from what we see now.
