"Final Fantasy: Echoes" Debuts as Second-Best Turn-Based RPG from Square Enix on Steam

As the first Final Fantasy title crafted in the HD-2D style, Final Fantasy: Resonance's Steam launch performance ranks second among all of Square Enix's turn-based RPGs.

After years of requests from players, Square Enix has finally released a Final Fantasy title in the HD-2D style. The latest spin-off in the series, Final Fantasy: Resonance, officially launched this week. Similar to last year's Octopath Traveler: Zero, this HD-2D RPG is a full console-grade adaptation of Square Enix's previous mobile game, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.

According to SteamDB data, the RPG's peak concurrent player count on its launch day reached 27,933, placing it among the top-performing turn-based RPGs from Square Enix on the platform. This figure narrowly surpassed this year's release of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, which had a launch peak of 27,390 players. However, this is not the best performance for a Square Enix turn-based RPG; Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, released in 2024, firmly holds the top spot with an impressive launch peak of 45,357 players.

《最终幻想:共鸣》Steam平台首发表现位列SE旗下回合制RPG第二

Of course, Final Fantasy: Resonance has only been out for its first day, and the peak concurrent player count for most Steam games typically occurs during the first weekend after release, so the title still has a chance to claim the top spot. At least for now, however, this launch has been quite successful for Square Enix. We also hope that the company will release a completely original HD-2D style Final Fantasy game in the future, rather than one solely adapted from a mobile title.
