"Permafrost Era" launched PC Early Access on Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.com on October 9, 2026, supporting single-player and up to 4-player co-op. The current version achieves a good balance between harsh survival and narrative exploration, but issues such as quest progression bugs, terrain sticking, and cumbersome controls still need improvement.
The game is developed by the Polish indie studio SpaceRocket Games and published by Toplitz Productions. The story takes place on an ice-covered Earth after a disaster caused by lunar anomalies and destruction. Players assume the role of Luke, an engineer who enters dangerous zones after receiving a message from his missing friend, Icarus. The core gameplay loop involves collecting stone and wood, crafting tools, building bases, taking on settlement quests, and searching for your friend.
Severe cold is the core threat during survival. Low temperatures continuously drain the cold meter, and once it reaches zero, the character constantly loses health. Players need to maintain their status using cold-weather gear, indoor spaces, bonfires, or the effects of alcohol, and schedule exploration based on day-night temperature differences. Abilities such as sprinting, combat, and building also improve with related actions, while some facilities and advanced equipment require main story progression to unlock.
The demo experience suggests that the design, which unlocks features through quest progression, successfully combines narrative exploration with traditional crafting survival. Ruins, recordings, hostile cults, wildlife, and companion dogs add diverse content to the exploration process.
However, the current version may still have issues such as characters getting stuck in terrain or certain quests not progressing properly. Inventory management is quite strict, and some Japanese text translations feel unnatural. The development team continues to release updates and fixes, and the Early Access phase for "Permafrost Era" is expected to last at least one year.
Detailed report by foreign media GameSpark:
Nowadays, survival titles have firmly established themselves on PC, console, and mobile platforms, with many players enjoying the thrill of survival in diverse worlds.
In GameSpark's "Crafting Survival Game Compendium," the author, a fan of the genre, introduces and explains the appeal of crafting survival games, focusing on classic titles. This time, we introduce "Permafrost Era," which entered Early Access on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG.com) on October 9, 2026.
Mostly Positive on Steam
"Permafrost Era" is crafted by the Polish indie game development studio SpaceRocket Games, with Toplitz Productions as the publisher. SpaceRocket Games was founded in 2023. According to their official website, the studio appears to be working on multiple projects simultaneously.
This title was officially announced in May 2024, but it originated from a prototype created by three people in December 2022. Since then, the team expanded to 15 members under the name SpaceRocket Games, actively releasing demos, hosting playtests, and gathering feedback while continuing development.
The game was originally scheduled to enter Early Access in 2025 but was delayed several times. As late as October 2026, close to its release, the developers organized multiple playtests. Even on the day Early Access launched, October 9, 2026, the game's release was delayed by several hours to fix crashes and other issues reported during the playtest that ended on October 6.
The story takes place on Earth. Due to disasters triggered by lunar anomalies and destruction, the entire world has turned into a permanent permafrost. Players take on the role of the protagonist, engineer Luke, who steps into harsh regions after receiving a message from a missing friend, challenging extreme survival. The game supports single-player mode as well as cooperative play for up to four people.
Early Access is expected to last at least one year. Most of the main content, such as area exploration, crafting, and quests, is already available in the current version. The full release plans to further expand the content, and the development roadmap for the Early Access phase has already been made public.
After starting the game, players first need to create their character. In addition to gender, voice, and skin tone, you can choose origins and traits that offer different starting equipment and skill bonuses. Furthermore, players can set the name and breed of their companion Dog.exe! Available breeds include Golden Retrievers, Border Collies, and more.
The story begins when the protagonist receives a message from their missing friend, Icarus, and arrives at the game's main stage, only to be separated from their companions due to an accident. Although the protagonist barely survives, they lose almost all their tools. At the start of the game, players receive contact from their companions and begin making the most basic survival preparations.
The system adopts traditional crafting survival mechanics. Players can use stone and wood to craft tools, or combine various building materials in the construction menu to build houses. Knives have a slightly special use: not only can they be used to skin animals, but they can also open locked doors and chests. Also, all tools have durability.
After completing the most basic preparations, players need to pass through a nearby cave to reach the first settlement on the other side. Although the world in this game is shrouded in severe cold, various factions have established bases and live there. In settlements, players can accept quests from NPCs, trade, and rest using existing beds.
In the first settlement, "Horizon," the player does not find Icarus. According to the leader, Robin, he has gone elsewhere. From this point on, the protagonist will travel across every corner of the frigid world in search of their missing friend.
Fast travel points are also available at each faction's base.
In the world of "Permafrost Era," the most terrifying threat is the severe cold. Even during the day, temperatures can drop to minus ten degrees or lower. Without preparation, simply walking along the road could pose a life-threatening risk. How to withstand the cold is the first step in survival.
The game features a cold meter. When temperatures are too low, the cold meter gradually decreases, and once it hits zero, health continuously drops. Basic methods to resist the cold include wearing equipment with better cold resistance, moving to slightly warmer places, and using bonfires for warmth. Additionally, actions like drinking alcohol can temporarily increase cold resistance or restore the cold meter.
Besides settlements, the map is scattered with many ruins. Simply entering a building provides some protection against the cold; if you're lucky, you might even find remnants of campfires left by past survivors. Even so, temperatures drop further at night, making it crucial to find a warm and safe place to settle.
As the game progresses, players will need to build their own base. Bases are constructed by combining components like foundations, roofs, and walls, which is quite straightforward. Note that production facilities like workbenches cannot be used without walls and roofs for shelter. Once a bonfire is built, it can be used not only for warmth but also for cooking raw meat obtained from hunting wildlife.
Players can also repair some facilities and use them as makeshift bases.
In the early stages, you lack adequate means to withstand the severe cold, so the basic strategy is to explore and gather materials during the relatively warmer daytime, while staying inside your base at night to craft items and rest. By holding down the interaction key near a bed or sleeping bag, you can sleep directly until morning. I didn't know this method at first and ended up lying in bed, dazed, waiting for dawn to break.
Various skills in this game grow as the player performs actions. For example, continuous sprinting and jumping reduce the stamina cost of those actions, while taking damage in combat increases maximum health. Additionally, gaining experience points through activities like building and crafting unlocks new crafting recipes.
However, many production facilities are unlocked progressively as the story advances. The main storyline requires players to visit various settlements and accept quests from NPCs. Therefore, if you encounter items you cannot craft yet, try advancing the story first. Advanced clothing offers significantly better cold resistance, making subsequent adventures much easier.
Additionally, players can find crafting recipes in various areas. There are plenty of objects to search in the game; whether it's corpses in ruins or cars abandoned on the roadside, they may provide materials. Inventory management is somewhat strict, but players can build bases to store items or entrust supplies to the Dog.exe accompanying them on their adventure, so active exploration and continuous resource collection are recommended.
Recordings and other items left by survivors are scattered across various locations, some of which trigger side quests. Additionally, a faction known as the "Moon Cult" exists in the region, hostile to the player and other factions. Of course, wildlife such as bears and wolves also pose threats, so players should prepare bows or guns before venturing out.
"Permafrost Era" is a crafting survival game that challenges players to struggle for life in an extremely harsh, ice-covered world. It is also a story-driven title. As quests progress, players gain access to more activities, allowing them to enjoy the adventure alongside the pure survival experience.
In the current version, characters occasionally get stuck in the terrain, and some quests may not progress correctly. However, the game has been actively updated since launch, with related issues being gradually fixed and improved. The game supports Japanese, and while some translations are noticeable, the overall quality is promising and expected to improve further before the full release.
"Permafrost Era" is currently available in Early Access on PC platforms (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG.com). Players can experience the process of gradually adapting to the harsh environment and mastering the ways of survival.
